I always associated schema markup with Google rich results. Now everyone's talking about AI search. Does adding structured data actually make me more likely to get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity, or is schema purely a traditional-SEO thing that has nothing to do with the AI engines?
Does structured data actually help with AI citations or just Google?

It helps both, though indirectly for AI. Structured data doesn't have a direct 'cite me more' dial in the models, but it does two things that matter for AI visibility:
- Entity clarity. Organization, Person, and Product schema give machines an unambiguous, structured statement of who you are and what you offer. AI systems building an entity graph of your brand benefit from that clarity — it reduces the chance they confuse or omit you.
- Extractability. FAQPage and well-marked-up Q&A content align with how models like to pull self-contained answers. Clean structure makes your content easier to lift accurately.
So schema is not a Google thing anymore. Get Organization and Article right sitewide, add FAQPage where you have real Q&A, and you're helping traditional rich results and AI entity understanding at once. Our audit's schema module plus the AI readiness score together show you where the gaps are.
'Entity clarity' is the concept I was missing. So it's less 'schema makes AI cite me' and more 'schema makes AI understand me correctly so I'm eligible.' That distinction helps a lot. Tightening up my Organization markup this week.
