Domain Overview shows my main competitor with roughly 4x my backlink count and a higher authority score. They outrank me for basically everything. Is this a lost cause without a massive link-building budget, or is there a smarter angle here?
How many backlinks do I realistically need to outrank a competitor?

Backlink count is the wrong scoreboard. Don't try to match their 4x — you'll lose that race and it's not the real lever anyway.
Use the keyword gap and top pages views in /tools/domain-overview to find where they're weak, not where they're strong. Look for:
- Keywords they rank 5-15 for with real volume — winnable with better content, no new links required.
The keyword gap view is a goldmine — found 14 terms where they're parked at position 9-12 with mediocre pages. That's my quarter sorted. Thanks Amara, reframing this from 'outrank the domain' to 'outrank specific pages' changes everything.
